Cabaret Pick of the Week
Estelle Reiner
By Peter Frank
The ukelele seems to be the comeback kid of the torch-song set. There's a whole
"Uketopia" night coming up at McCabes in mid-March, and this Friday night you
should grid your loins --er, leis-- for not one, but two uke-wielding chanteuses,
rawther different in style and sensibility but soitinly slightly similar in sentiment
and strumability. The dinner hour's hostess is Estelle Reiner, doyenneof one
of Los Angeles' more ferociously creative families, if the only songbird of the
bunch. La Reine des Reiners favors rare bits from the 1930s and '40s, slipping
them with her full, mellow tones into something comfortable. Whether that's comfortable
sexy or comfortable homey depends on the song. Estelle's mood, her band's, and/or
yours. But wherever else her selections hit you, they smooth the ears back nicely.
Reiner reportedly will wind up her act with a solo on her ukelele, which should
segue us sans soui into the late evening's gig...Estelle Reiner at LunaPark (in the Cabaret Room,
natch). |
